CUMBERLAND — With only one player back from last season’s Region XX championship team, Allegany College of Maryland head basketball coach Mike Baker will be looking for some immediate help from 10 incoming freshmen.
The Trojans finished with an overall 24-8 record last season, defeating Garrett College for the Region XX Division I championship before falling to Aiken (S.C.) Tech in the District III playoffs.
Allegany will be opening its season on Friday, Nov. 3, against Danville (Ill.) Community College in the Vincennes Kiwanis Trailblazer Invitational.
The only returning player from last year’s team is 2003 Cumberland Times-News Area Player of the Year Ian Grady from Allegany High School.
Grady moved into a starting position in his first year with the Trojans and earned honorable mention on the All-Region XX team. The 6-foot-5 forward averaged 12.4 points a game and led the team in rebounds with 226 for a 7.5 average.
Among the 10 newcomers are first-team Times-News Area selection Harvey Brooks from Fort Hill, and Grady’s former Allegany teammate Shane McDade.
The other freshmen are Marvin Bolden of Fredericksburg, Va.; George Degroat, Portsmouth, Va.; Jeremy Hunter, Buffalo, N.Y.; Lewis Lambert, Baltimore; Calvin Lee, Ettrick, Va.; Nigel Lee, Glen Dale, Md.; Bryen Spriggs of Philadelphia; and B.J. Williams, Raleigh, N.C.
Brooks joined the Fort Hill team seven games into the season and helped lead the Sentinels to a 19-5 overall record and a share of the City League title. The 6-foot-2 point guard averaged 21.1 points and three assists a game. He played his sophomore and junior years at Landstown High School in Virginia Beach, Va., and was an All-Conference selection.
McDade was a starter on the 2003-2004 Allegany team that advanced to the Maryland Class 1A finals after winning the Area, WMIL and City League titles. The 6-5 forward averaged 11.4 points a game and set a school record for three-point goals with 67-of-178 (37.6 percent).
Bolden didn’t play last year after earning first-team All-Battlefield District and second-team All-Region honors in his senior year at Courtland High School. The 5-10 guard averaged 19.4 points, six assists and four steals a game.
Degroat played his senior year at I.C. Norcom High School in Portsmouth and earned first-team All-Tidewater Area, All-District and All-Region honors. The 6-5, 215-pound forward averaged 15 points and 13 rebounds.
Hunter was a three-year starter at Hutch Tech in Buffalo and was a first-team York Cup Conference selection along with receiving honorable mention on the All-Western New York team. The 6-4, 228-pound forward averaged 22 points, nine rebounds and five assists a game.
Lambert was a two-year starter at Woodlawn High School. He was a first-team All-Baltimore County selection and was named to the Charm City Classic All-Tournament team. The 6-6, 240-pound center/forward averaged 15 points, nine rebounds and two blocks a game.
Calvin Lee was a three-year starter at Matoaca High School and was the Class AAA Central District Player of the Year along with second-team Richmond All-Metro and All-Region honors. The 6-7 center average 20 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks a game.
Nigel Lee played last season at Bowie High School after playing two years at Eleanor Roosevelt High School. The 6-6, 135-pound center/forward was a second-team All-Prince Georges County last season after averaging 14 points and 10 rebounds a game.
Spriggs started two year’s at John Bartram High School and was a third-team Philadelphia All-Public School selection. The 6-5 forward averaged 15 points, eight rebounds and six assists a game as a senior.
Williams was a four-year starter at Garner Magnet High School and was the Great Neuse River Conference Player of the Year. The 6-1 guard averaged 19.5 points, six assists and four steals a game as a senior.
