Man charged with theft, assault

CUMBERLAND — A 38-year-old Arlington, Va., man was arrested following a reported theft at a Greene Street store at 3:57 a.m. Saturday, according to Cumberland Police.

Robert Eugene Dade allegedly walked out of the store without paying for $42.78 worth of merchandise, police said. When officers arrived, they found Dade, who had been confronted by a store employee, sitting in a vehicle in the parking lot, according to police reports.

After the arrest, Dade was escorted to a holding cell where he allegedly struck an officer with his elbow, prompting a brief struggle, police said.

Dade was charged with theft and second-degree assault. He was being held on a $7,500 bond.

City man charged with sex offense

CUMBERLAND — A 51-year-old Virginia Avenue man was arrested following a reported sexual assault at a Virginia Avenue apartment at 3:26 a.m. Saturday, according to Cumberland Police.

David Lee Widmyer allegedly stood naked over the victim and touched her while she was sleeping in a room with her friend, police said. When the victim, who has been staying with Widmyer for several months, screamed, her friend awoke and called the police, according to police reports.

Widmyer was charged with fourth-degree sex offense and second-degree assault. He was released on his own recognizance.

Man found in vehicle arrested

FROSTBURG — A 19-year-old Huntington, W.Va., man was arrested after a woman found him sleeping in her 1995 Saturn on Welsh Hill at 7:45 a.m. Saturday, according to Frostburg Police.

When police arrived, they located Nathan Cameron Coates in the vehicle, which had sustained interior damage, according to police reports.

Coates was charged with malicious destruction of property, failure to provide proof of age and identification, tampering with a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent and underage possession of an alcoholic beverage. Coates was taken to district court where he was released pending trial.

One injured in accident

CUMBERLAND — A 48-year-old Cumberland man was injured in a vehicle accident on the Henderson Avenue bridge around 1 p.m. Saturday, according to Cumberland Police.

George Ashby was stopped in traffic when a Kia Spectra operated by Richard Clevenger, 52, Philadelphia, Pa., struck the back of his Nissan truck, police said.

Ashby was transported to Cumberland Memorial Hospital by a Cumberland Fire Department Ambulance. Clevenger was issued a citation charging him with failure to control speed to avoid a collision.

Man faces numerous charges

CUMBERLAND — A 44-year-old Standardsville, Va., man was arrested following a traffic stop on Maryland Avenue at 12:20 a.m. Saturday, according to Cumberland Police.

When James Norman Powers was pulled over for allegedly driving erratically, officers detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage, according to police reports. Powers was arrested after failing standard field sobriety tests, police said.

Officers learned that Powers, who was driving with a suspended license in Maryland, was wanted on three bench warrants, according to police reports.

Powers was charged with driving while intoxicated and operating a vehicle on a suspended driver’s license; he was also served with two bench warrants charging him with failure to appear in district court and one bench warrant charging him with a probation violation. He was being held on a $25,405 bond.

City man creates disturbance

CUMBERLAND — An 18-year-old Maryland Avenue man was arrested after interfering with a traffic stop on Maryland Avenue at 5:42 p.m. Friday, according to Cumberland Police.

Donavan Isiah Lee began to yell and create a disturbance while an officer was conducting a registration violation traffic stop across the street, according to police reports.

Lee was instructed to keep the peace and leave the scene, police said. Lee, who continued to yell and make threats, was placed under arrest, police said.

Officers found a marijuana cigarette in Lee’s pocket and a small bag of marijuana in his shoe, according to police reports.

Lee was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of CDS paraphernalia, disorderly conduct, failure to obey a lawful order and obstruction of justice. He was released on his own recognizance.

The vehicle operator, Jordon Swisher, 26, Frostburg, was released from the scene after being issued several citations, police said.

City woman held on $2,500 bond

CUMBERLAND — A 55-year-old Bedford Street woman was served with a district court arrest warrant charging her with failure to appear in district court, according to Cumberland Police.

Norma Lee Younger was being held on a $2,500 bond in the Allegany County Detention Center after being served with the warrant Friday.

Two accidents occur on Headsville Road

FOUNTAIN, W.Va. — Two separate vehicle accidents occurred on Headsville Road on Saturday, according to the Mineral County Office of Emergency Services.

The first single-vehicle accident, which resulted in four people being transported to Potomac Valley Hospital, occurred at 12:41 p.m.

Fountain, Burlington and McCoole Volunteer Fire Departments and Valley Medical ambulance responded. West Virginia State Police Investigated.

The second single-vehicle accident, which resulted in one person being transported to Potomac Valley Hospital, occurred at 7:30 p.m.

Fountain and McCoole volunteer fire departments and Valley Medical responded. The Mineral County Sheriff’s Office investigated. Additional details of the accidents were not available Saturday night.
