Bel Air Elementary School fifth-grader Dakota Roy and Appalachian Lab chemist Jim Garlitz neutralize acidic pond water by adding an antacid pill to the water sample Monday during a visit by Garlitz and Geoff French of the Frostburg lab. The visit by the chemists was made possible through Allegany County Public Schools STEM Project grant, which supports efforts to improve students' exposure to the fields of math, science and technology. Kristen Morten, the STEM Project coordinator, facilitated the chemists' visit for the fifth-graders.
