Consulting archeologist and author Hunter Lesser measures soil levels in a test square where a portion of a stockade trench was found as Stephen McBride screens material for artifacts Tuesday afternoon at Ashby's Fort and an adjacent property in Fort Ashby. A grant from the West Virginia Humanities Council to the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution is funding McBride Preservation Services' search for the footprint of the fort and locate remains and artifacts from the French and Indian War. The crew will work on the site for about two weeks.
