Diggses celebrate anniversary

CUMBERLAND — Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Diggs celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on Dec. 14, with a renewal of their wedding vows officiated by their grandson, Pastor James Diggs Jr.

They were married in Cumberland Dec. 14, 1939, by the Rev. Baughman and are life-long residents.

Maurice is the son of the late Joseph and Edith Schultz Diggs of Ridgeley, W.Va. Evelyn is the daughter of the late James and Gertrude McNeill Cross of Cumberland.

Maurice is a veteran of World War II and retired from Pittsburgh Plate Glass in 1981. Evelyn retired from J.S. Raub Shoe Store, White Oaks, the same year.

Four generations celebrated the anniversary at Rocky Gap Lodge on Dec. 12: son James and wife Nancy Fitzwater Diggs, Glenn Dale; son Ronald of Cumberland; their grandsons and families, James Jr. and wife Karrie of Millersville and their children, Jakob, Jessika and Joseph; and Jason and wife Cara of Millersville and their daughter Kelsey; and granddaughter, Nora Diggs of Beltsville. Long-time friends Gloria Matthews and Nadine Fitzwater also attended.

The couple was also honored with a celebration on Dec. 14 hosted by Kevin Youngblood and staff at Devlin Manor where Evelyn is a resident. Cake and punch were served for residents, staff and family.

A memory quilt featuring photos of six generations of family and traditional quilt motifs was presented to the couple to commemorate the occasion. The quilt was made by their daughter-in-law, Nancy Diggs.
