CUMBERLAND — William and Betty Shriver, Flintstone, were honored recently by their family with a 65th wedding anniversary celebration at the Ali Ghan Shrine Club Nov. 25, 2012.
The couple were married on Nov. 27, 1947, at the parsonage of Flintstone Methodist Church, with the Rev. B.F. Hartman officiating. It was also Thanksgiving and the bride’s birthday. In the last 65 years, Thanksgiving, Mrs. Shriver’s birthday and their anniversary have occurred on the same day nine times.
Mrs. Shriver, the former Betty P. Cessna, is the daughter of the late Wilbur and Ethel Cessna, proprietor of the Cessna Sawmill. Mrs. Shriver has worked in the home and on the farm for 65 years and was also self-employed for 16 years in the housekeeping business.
Mr. Shriver is the son of the late Emory and Edna Shriver. He was self-employed for 30 years in the timber business prior to driving a school bus for many K-12 students in the Flintstone area and serving the Allegany County Board of Education for 18 years until his retirement in June 1991.
After their retirements, Mr. and Mrs. Shriver have enjoyed their life together as they continue to maintain the family farm.
Mr. and Mrs. Shriver are the parents of three children: Robert Shriver, Patricia (Shriver) Cordry and Janet (Shriver) Raines. They have four grandchildren: Robby Shriver, Timmy Shriver, Melissa (Raines) Miller, Chuck Raines and eight great-grandchildren.
The theme for the celebration was centered on the Crystal Park Skating Rink, where the couple met. Decorations were representative of Hallmark’s symbol for the 65th, blue sapphire diamonds. A prayer was provided with words of praise for the blessing the parents are to the family, particularly noting the example they have set for the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The 1947 wedding announcement was read. The couple were taken back in time with facts of significant events in 1947, including the cost of living compared to today, and expressions of love from their great-grandchildren. Phone calls were received from out-of-state grandchildren unable to attend. Photographs of the couple throughout the last 65 years were displayed.
The cake was decorated with white roses, blue satin ribbon and a monogram of the couple’s initials. The couple danced in front of their original roller skates and a poster reading “Bill & Betty — 65 years and still rolling along.”
The couple expressed their appreciation for the love, respect and honor bestowed upon them by their family and ended the event by stating, “Let’s do this again next year.”
