ELLERSLIE — Clarence D. and Myrna Lea (Miller) Anderson were secretly united in marriage July 16, 1961, at the Wesley Methodist Parsonage, Cumberland, by the Rev. E. Kyle Sawyers. Mrs. Sawyers served as the witness.
Clarence and Myrna met and fell in love during the summer of 1959, when Clarence drove the Mr. Softee Ice Cream truck up Humbird Street in Ellerslie, where Myrna lived. Clarence soon discovered Myrna’s two favorites, hot fudge sundaes and hot fudge milk shakes. He made sure that Myrna got one or the other on every trip.
The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary by taking a Carnival cruise out of the Baltimore Harbor to the Bahamas with their family. The cruise, which took place July 3 through 10, was a gift from their children, Janie Bucy and husband, Jim, Ellerslie; Dr. Diane Anderson, Troy, Ohio; and Timothy Anderson and wife, Dawn, Bel Air.
In addition to their three children, Clarence and Myrna have been blessed with 10 grandchildren, Stephen Bucy and wife, Christy, Zarian Anderson and Isaac Bucy, all of Ellerslie; Jonathan Bucy and wife, Molly, Madison Wis.; Katelyn Bucy, Halethorpe; Alek, Nick and Adrian Prus, Troy; and Caleb and Seth Anderson, Bel Air. To the grandkids, the Andersons are Pap and Mimi.
The Andersons also have two precious little great-granddaughters, Meghan Bucy, 3 1/2 years old, and Madalyn Bucy, 10 months.
While on the cruise, the couple enjoyed shore time on three islands, pool-side activities, elegant dining, posing for a family portrait and seven days of fun with the whole family. There were unlimited free ice cream cones for all, bringing back Mister Softee memories for Pap and Mimi.
The couple resides in the home which Clarence built on Teddy Bear Trail, Ellerslie, and their door is always open to family and friends. They enjoy their tree farm, garden and flowers and watching the wildlife and birds.
Clarence held several jobs over the past 50 years following Mister Softee. He worked for 19 years at Kelly-Springfield Tire Company and then was self-employed in Anderson Construction and Anderson Realty. He was maintenance supervisor at the Bon-Ton and finally retired from the Maryland State Police Barracks in LaVale as the maintenance mechanic senior in June 2008.
Myrna had the privilege of being a stay-at-home mother and helped Clarence in all his business ventures. She became a licensed practical nurse in 1986 and worked part-time at the Allegany County Nursing Home for 11 years,
Clarence and Myrna are members of Solid Rock Independent Baptist Church in Corriganville. They both became Christians around the age of 12. The Andersons enjoy serving their Savior, Jesus Christ, at their church and in many areas of their lives. Their motto is “Only one life, ’twill soon be past, Only what’s done for Christ will last.”
Clarence and Myrna want to thank their family for being a blessing in their lives. They also thank all their friends who sent cards to help celebrate this special event.
